A beautiful and lush green lawn is often the envy of the neighborhood. Many people struggle to keep their lawns looking their best all year long because they do not know how to properly take care of their lawn. A patchy looking lawn with dead grass is not only unappealing but it makes your home’s appearance less attractive as well. Proper lawn maintenance goes beyond simply watering and mowing and if you want your lawn to be the envy of the neighborhood, it is important to ensure that your lawn is being taken care of, the right way. Below are tips for how to properly maintain your lawn so it looks beautiful all year long. Many people find that they do not have enough time to properly care for their lawn, see that it is not looking its best, and panic. Before you ever see your grass turning brown and looking dead, hire a professional lawn maintenance team that can help your lawn thrive.

  • Good Soil
    • A good lawn starts with good soil.   You may be able to get grass to grow but a lawn cannot truly thrive without a good foundation and proper care. You can get a kit at your local hardware store or lawn and garden store and test your soil to ensure it is good soil in which to grow grass. The soil test kit will let you know what your soil has in it and if it is deficient in anything that may be important for growing grass. Your lawn care service will also be able to test your soil if you having trouble growing a beautiful lawn.
  • Use the Right Grass
    • Different kinds of grass grow better in different climates. What works in Florida may not work in Minnesota and what works in New York will likely not work in Arizona. A local lawn and garden center or your professional landscaper will be able to guide you as to what grass is best for your lawn.
  • Water Regularly
    • A beautiful lawn simply cannot be achieved without enough water. There are different theories about how often a lawn needs water. Some say you should water once per week and water deep while others say that your lawn just needs a certain amount of water per week and it should be spread out each day. Certain climates may require more or less watering but the rule of thumb is that your lawn needs 1-2 inches of water per week.
  • Fertilize
    • Just like humans need water and food to survive, so does grass. We have already discussed water but grass also needs to be fed every so often if you want it to stay green and beautiful all year long. Do not panic, you do not need to fertilize your lawn every day, weekly or even monthly. Fertilize your lawn 2-4 times each year (Spring and Fall at a minimum, with each seasonal change is ideal) and apply dolimitic lime every few years and your grass will look better than ever.
  • Mow
    • If you never mow your lawn it will overgrow but if you mow it too short it will suffer as well. By letting your grass be a little taller, it will also block out the sun that weeds need to grow and it will allow the roots of the grass to grow stronger.
